Matt Dwan is now in his fifth overall season as an assistant coach with the Loyola College men's lacrosse program. After serving as a volunteer assistant coach with Loyola in 2004, Dwan was named a full-time assistant in June of 2004 and has continued to work with the team's defensive unit and long-pole midfielders.
A 1995 graduate of Loyola College, Dwan was drafted by the Baltimore Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse in the 2001 supplemental draft. He appeared in every game his first season and started 13 games in 2002, leading his team to the Major League Lacrosse Championship. In his last season with the Baltimore Bayhawks (2003), Dwan started 10-of-11 regular season games and started both postseason contests. He helped Baltimore reach the MLL Championship Game against Long Island by anchoring a defense that allowed 159 goals for the entire season.
At Loyola, Dwan was a three-time All-America, earning first-team honors as a senior in 1995, becoming the second player in NCAA history to earn first-team honors as a long-pole midfielder. He was a second-team All-America in 1994 and was named to the honorable mention squad as a sophomore. As a co-captain and team co-MVP his final two years at Loyola, he helped the Greyhounds reach the NCAA tournament each of his four seasons.
Dwan suited up for the Green Turtle Lacrosse Club in the United States Club Lacrosse Association (USCLA) after graduating from Evergreen. While there, he earned All-Club recognition on four separate occasions.
A native of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Dwan was an all-county football selection and an all-section lacrosse pick as a senior at Yorktown High School. In 2003, Dwan was inducted into Loyola's Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2005 entered the Hudson Valley Lacrosse Chapter of the Hall of Fame.
In just four seasons as an assistant coach with the Greyhounds, Dwan has helped Loyola's defensive unit become a force and the backbone for the team's success. Last season, the Greyhounds once again held opponents to under 10 goals per game, as they have done in each of Dwan's season's at Loyola. In the year's marquee game against high-powered Duke, the defense held the Blue Devils to seven goals en route to an 8-7 victory at the First Four in San Diego, Calif.
Dwan and his wife Michelle currently reside in Annapolis, Md. Michelle is a former three-time All-America midfielder at Loyola College. He has two brothers, Tim and Bill, and two sisters, Kerry and Eileen.
